World Cycling Day aims to raise awareness of the many positive contributions the bicycle has made to modern society. World Cycling Day celebrates the people, events and trends that have evolved from the invention of the most efficient device for human-powered transportation ever created to the social force it is today.
Why August 11th?
World Cycling Day is August 11th, Annually
On August 11, 1893, the first official World Cycling Championship was held in Chicago by the newly formed International Cyclists Association. For that reason and more, August 11th marks a symbolic day in the history of cycling. It came in the midst of a bicycling craze that was sweeping the world and threatening to replace the horse as the most efficient form of individual transportation.
How August 11, 1893 Changed Everything
Top wheelmen (that's what they called them back then) of the day like AA Zimmerman, winner of that first world championship, headed a parade of greats that made cycling one of the world’s most popular sports. Passion for the bicycle created the first bicycle factories and launched pneumatic tires, liberated women’s fashions, drove advertising campaigns, paved roads and gave enthusiasts a healthy glow.
